Communication exercise – positive

 

 

 

  • Practice this exercise 3 times a week for 10 minutes.

 

 

    1. Decide who is going to talk and who will listen.

 

 

    1. The speaker talks briefly for 2 minutes or less about something they like about the listener or something they both enjoy.

 

    1. The listener summarizes what has been said and their understanding of how the speaker feels.

 

    1. The speaker says if this is correct and corrects this if necessary.

 

 

    1. Swap roles – if the new speaker responds to what the original speaker said - this is fine but make sure you follow the exercise.

 

 

    1. The new listener summarizes what the speaker said and how they feel in the same way as before.

 

 

    1. If either person becomes upset slow down and the other person summarizes how they feel

 

 

    1. Try to emphasize positive feelings and positive things that have or are happening.
