  • Try to understand the other person’s thoughts and feelings
  • When you have differing views - listen with curiosity, be open to gaining a larger perspective
  • Ask questions aimed at deepening your understanding of the other persons ideas
  • Check your understanding with them

When there is disagreement or misunderstanding -

  • Be friendly, respectful and kind
  • Help and support each other
  • Listen, be accepting and curious
    • Try to understand what the other person thinkings, how they feel and what they would like to happen
    • summerize your understanding of their thoughts and feelings and check with them if you are accurate
    • This process shows you care and often deepens the discussion and connection 
  • Explain how you see the situation, how you feel and what you would like. 
  • Ask for help

 

Sometimes we need to say things that are unpleasant for the other person. In healthy, happy relationships the pleasant communications like, interest, fondness, affection, praise and appreciation Outnumber the unpleasant   5:1
